Coaching

Our club’s coaching philosophy is “Athlete driven, coach facilitated.”

This means that our coaches will support your learning – but most of your progress as a paddler will simply come from experience, spending time on the water paddling. We don’t have a set of steps to follow as each person will develop at their own pace and fitness level. Sometimes you will even seem to take a step back to improve your technique, or to allow for a change in your boat type. Our coaches will look out for ways to help you improve where ever you are, and whatever your age, but we also recommend that you ask other athletes for advice and look out for each other.

“He waka eke noa” – a maori saying that means “we’re all in this together” or even better “we’re all in the same canoe”!

Weekly training times

This schedule is for club members. Your coach will let you know which squad you should be paddling in. If you are new to paddling, or aren’t yet a member, we can help you over on this page.

Morning sessions – all athletes need to be ready to paddle at 6:30am. So…

  • 6am meet upstairs in club rooms for stretches & a few of Gav’s early morning jokes
  • 6:15am set up, check boat, and listen to briefing on session
  • 6:30am on water paddling

If you are not ready at 6:30am you may be asked not to paddle because of the risks of not paddling with the group.

Lights – All paddlers will need lights to be able to paddle in the morning sessions once it is dark so get prepared. You can buy from the sports or bike shops. Ideally a small white light at front (not too bright), and red at the back.

Key tags – all athletes training on weekday mornings need a key tag so you are not left outside in the wet & cold. Email if you need one ($30 bond).

Boat repairs – if you note any pins missing please replace to avoid damage. Please never put a boat away broken (even if it wasn’t you!). Let Gav know or email info@northshorecanoeclub.org.nz & it will be repaired.
